Alternating Set Quantifiers in Modal Logic

نویسنده

چکیده

We establish the strictness of several set quantiVer alternation hierarchies that are based on modal logic, evaluated on various classes of Vnite graphs. This extends to the modal setting a celebrated result of Matz, Schweikardt and Thomas (2002), which states that the analogous hierarchy of monadic second-order logic is strict. Thereby, the present paper settles a question raised by van Benthem (1983), revived by ten Cate (2006), and partially answered by Kuusisto (2008, 2015).

Modal Ontology and Generalized Quantifiers

Timothy Williamson has argued that in the debate on modal ontology, the familiar distinction between actualism and possibilism should be replaced by a distinction between positions he calls contingentism and necessitism. He has also argued in favor of necessitism, using results on quantified modal logic with plurally interpreted second-order quantifiers showing that necessitists can draw distin...

Bisimulation Quantified Modal Logics: Decidability

Bisimulation quantifiers are a natural extension of modal logics. They preserve the bisimulation invariance of modal logic, while allowing monadic second-order expressivity. Unfortunately, it is not the case that extension by bisimulation quantifiers always preserves the decidability of a modal logic. Here we examine a general class of modal logics for which decidability is preserved under exte...

Everyone Knows That Someone Knows: Quantifiers over Epistemic Agents

Modal logic S5 is commonly viewed as an epistemic logic that captures the most basic properties of knowledge. Kripke proved a completeness theorem for the firstorder modal logic S5 with respect to a possible worlds semantics. A multiagent version of the propositional S5 as well as a version of the propositional S5 that describes properties of distributed knowledge in multiagent systems has also...

Graded Computation Tree Logic with Binary Coding

Graded path quantifiers have been recently introduced and investigated as a useful framework for generalizing standard existential and universal path quantifiers in the branching-time temporal logic CTL (GCTL), in such a way that they can express statements about a minimal and conservative number of accessible paths. These quantifiers naturally extend to paths the concept of graded world modali...

Ultraproducts of Admissible Models for Quantified Modal Logic

Admissible models for quantified modal logic have a restriction on which sets of worlds are admissible as propositions. They give an actualist interpretation of quantifiers that leads to very general completeness results: for any propositional modal logic S there is a quantificational proof system QS that is complete for validity in models whose algebra of admissible propositions validates S. I...
